The famous introduction of today's Gospel can be compared to
entering the drive of a large country house with extensive beautiful

"After a series of Sunday Gospels from St John, we are back
with St Mark. Jesus is being upbraided by the Pharisees and some of the
scribes for his disciples' failure to pay attention to the laws governing
eating. Jesus points out that it is not the externals but what comes from
the heart that matters. Is it not the same in our own day? We have so many
laws now, and political correctness is over the top! But our moral decline
is due to lip service to the laws to ease our consciences and failure to
allow God to transform our hearts" |

“Choose you this day whom you will serve!” (Joshua chapter

the corner? Suppose the scientists find the so called ‘God Particle?’ Will
it explode our faith or lead us more deeply into the mystery of God? What
about the conundrums of human sexuality? What about the Eucharist – down the
road (or up the road) they believe differently to us! Jesus said “Will you
go away too”? (John chapter 6) |

The
Seventh Sunday of Easter
Jesus prayed “For their (our)
sake I consecrate myself, that they also may be consecrated in truth”. He
also said, “I AM the Way, the Truth and the Life”. Pilate once asked “What
is truth?” – but he didn’t stay to hear Jesus’ answer. Today in the homily
we revisit the Feast of the Ascension celebrated here last Thursday, so that
we may all bask in the Truth of our salvation of which the Ascension was its
consummation and of which our re-sited statue is a perpetual reminder.

Family Eucharist
Every Eucharist is a ‘family eucharist’ but this particular short liturgy
today is especially designed for our young people and families who may not
be so familiar with the traditional format. Instead of going out to their
own ‘liturgy of the word’, children will stay for the whole service,
illustrate the Gospel and lead the prayers. Our theme is friendship and love
– with each other and primarily with Jesus. Jesus no longer calls us
servants but friends! |

There are many false vines
which bear sour fruit. Philip breaks the bread of the Scriptures with the
Ethiopian, and he is grafted in to the True Vine by Baptism. St John

as we confess His Name, we are grafted into Him and we grow through His love
into abundant and wholesome fruitfulness. |

What’s in a name? Everything! Ancient cultures laid great significance to a
person’s name – if you knew their name you had a particular relationship,
even power concerning that person. The Name of Jesus stems from ‘Jehovah
Saves’. The crippled man in the first reading was saved by the Name.
St John exhorts us all to believe in the Name, Today we celebrate Jesus the
Good Shepherd who knows us all by name. He is our pastor who calls us all to
pastor our brothers and sisters as members of His priestly body, the Church.

Third Sunday of Easter
Following His Resurrection
from the dead, Jesus appears to his disciples on the Road to Emmaus, then
(today’s Gospel) to the Eleven Apostles gathered in Jerusalem. He is no
ghost! He eats and drinks with them. Both times, there is a Eucharistic
celebration. Jesus dines with them (Rev 3:20) and opens the Scriptures to
them. So with our celebration today. He comes to us to raise us up and so
that we can bear witness to Him in the world. |

The
Second Sunday of Easter
The Resurrection appearances of Jesus all happen in the ordinary stuff and
events of life and the important result of these appearances is the witness
of the apostles to the hope of the resurrection which they preach with
courage, clarity and compassion. Mission was their priority and so it should
be for us as a community of faith. Some tentative ways forward are suggested
as to how this can be done in 2009. |

Summary of
Address by Fr. Andrew
The opening words for Ash Wednesday say: “ I
invite you in the name of the Church to the observance of a holy Lent,
by self examination and repentance; by prayer, fasting and self denial
and by reading and meditating on God’s holy word.”
These themes will be explained in
sermons 1st, 15th and

Today the terms self examination and
repentance will looked at. This will be done under three headings:
-
How to do a self examination ?
-
What is confession, counsel,
penance and absolution.
-
How to repent that is move on
